AITP NCC 2002 Java Competition Event - Kansas City, MO

Gateway™ PC Lab Setup

The Gateway™ PC lab was setup in the Liberty Room and included:

  • Over 20 CAT5 cables where crimped on-site for long-distance runs
  • Several additional pre-made patch cables were used to connect other devices where cable lengths were appropriate
  • The network topology included a 24-port switch connected to over 10 hubs, a wireless DHCP router, 4 JetDirect ports (HP Laser Printers), and Internet access via DSL
  • 30 Gateway Profile PCs setup (donated by Gateway)
  • 10 Rent-a-PCs setup (rented from a local provider)
  • A master desktop was configured for required software and connectivity (this required several masters since the Rent-a-PCs weren't all identical)
  • Network multicast using Ghost
  • Finally, the teardown and re-distribution of equipment to donors

The Gateway PC's were donated by Gateway while most of the remaining network infrastructure was donated by AITP professional members. Many of the larger items were shipped to the hotel ahead of the conference. A special note of appreciation is extended to all of the volunteers that provided their time, equipment, and who paid for the shipment of many of the heavier items out of their own pockets.

The Gateway PC lab setup was delayed a bit by the US Vice President's visit to the hotel (Dick Cheney). The security procedures delayed getting the computers delivered and setup in the lab. US Secret Service and local law enforcement also limited access within the hotel. Once the computers were checked out, the AITP volunteers and Gateway staff were able to get the lab setup without further delay.
