Person Numbers take the form YYMMDD-NNSC and are stored in computer systems by adding the century prefix (YYYYMMDD-NNSC).

• YYMMDD correspond to your date of birth
• NNS corresponds to your birth number and is issued based on the particular date on which you were born
• S corresponds to your sex (odd for men and even for women)
• C corresponds to your checksum, which is used to validate your person number
  
  The birth number consists of three figures. It is a number between 001 and 999. The last of these three figures are odd for a man and even for a woman. People born on the same day must have different birth numbers. The two first figures in the birth number has no allocated significance. As from 1990 birth numbers are at random from a series which covers the whole country.
  
  Between the date of birth and the birth number there is a hyphen (-), which is replaced by a plus sign (+) when a person reaches the age of 100.
  
  The tax authority (skattemyndigheten) decides the Personal Identity Number. Personal Identity Numbers are given to:
  
  

• Children born in Sweden
• Children born abroad to a woman who is in the population register in Sweden
• People who immigrate and who have not previously had a Personal Identity Number

A man born on 23 August 1964 with individual number 323:

To calculate the checksum:

1) The digits in the year, month, and day of birth and the birth number are multiplied by 2 and 1 alternately:

2) Add together the digits in the products. Note that double digit numbers are regarded as individual digits for this purpose (i.e. 12 is regarded as 1 + 2 etc.):

1+2+4+0+8+4+3+6+2+6=36

3) The unit digit in the sum of the digits is subtracted from 10:

The unit sum of 36 is 6, therefore 10-6=4

4) The resulting number is the check digit:

The check digit is 4
